Three
women of varying backgrounds prepare to board a boat which will transport
them to a picnic. Suddenly they are handed a letter from their friend
Addie Ross, who claims she is leaving town and taking one of the three
women's husband with her. She does not mention which one's husband
it is. The day is spent with the three women recalling scenes from
their marriages in flashback.
Director Joseph Mankiewicz won Academy
Awards for both his screenplay and direction of this critically-acclaimed
film.
Alfalfa has a brief scene with Thelma "Rear Window" Ritter,
who plays a maid. As the bell rings, Ritter opens the door...
Alfalfa: Hiya, Sadie!
Ritter: Hi, Leo.
Alfalfa [handing Ritter a gift-wrapped
package]: For Mr. Phipps.
Ritter: Mr. Phipps?
Alfalfa: Yeah...[looks around
inside of house curiously] Sure smells good!
Ritter: Wish I could say the same for you! [She shuts door
on Alfalfa brusquely, concluding his brief appearance.]
Thelma
Ritter unceremoniously shows Alfalfa the door.
