Alfalfa plays a bellhop in this political dramatic
comedy. He carries the luggage for some pretty heavy-duty talent:
Spencer Tracy as a presidential candidate, Katherine Hepburn as his
on-again, off-again wife, and campaign manager Van Johnson. As they
enter their suite, Alfalfa is left literally holding the bags while
they banter back and forth excitedly.
Alfalfa [anxiously]:
Where do you want these?
Finally, Hepburn tells him where to dump the
luggage. After a few moments, Alfalfa re-emerges from the other room.
Alfalfa [to Tracy]:
I turned on the radiator and opened the window.
This gets him a tip from Tracy and he leaves
the suite, ending his appearance.
Alfalfa
tells Spencer Tracy that he has turned on the
radiator and opened the window (huh?) Click image to enlarge.
"State of the Union" features some
familiar faces. Besides, of course, the aforementioned Hepburn, Tracy,
and Johnson, we see a youthful Angela Lansbury as a cutthroat newspaper
publisher heiress...
...Margaret "Wicked Witch" Hamilton
(below right) as a housekeeper smitten with Van Johnson...
...and, following his retirement from the Green
Street Grammar School, none other than...
...Maurice "Arbor
Day" Cass, as a tourist who runs into Spencer Tracy while
visiting the White House (see below).
Let joy be unconfined!
