4alfalfa.com has a problem. According to several
film information sources, Alfalfa appears in this Hal Roach-produced
comedy, but we'll be darned if we can find him, even after repeated
careful viewings. So we invite our fellow Alfalfateurs to examine
this film to see if they can spot him (the film was made in 1937,
so keep an eye out for a "Glove
Taps"-era Alfalfa).
The reason we are including this film in our review of Alfalfa's non-Rascals
appearances is because it's so interesting on its own merits, even
without (we think) our hero. "Pick A Star" is a virtual
cornucopia of familiar faces.
That's
Harold Switzer, above right, in a crowd
scene. If we had to guess, maybe the Alfalfa
mystery can be blamed on his being confused
with his older brother. In the same crowd scene
can be found Jerry Tucker (see below).
There are many other Hal Roach/Little Rascals
players in "Pick A Star":

Rosina
Lawrence (left) and Mae "Roamin'
Holiday" Wallace.
Johnny
Arthur (from "Feed 'Em and
Weep", "Night 'N'
Gales",
"Anniversary Trouble")
Center:
Wilma Cox ("Canned Fishing",
"Feed 'Em and Weep",
"Our Gang Follies of 1938";
at right is Jack Norton, who
played the dentist Dr. Schwartz
in "The Awful Tooth".
That's
Jimmy Findlayson at lower right, who had a memorable
role in "Mush and Milk". At extreme left is Patsy Kelly.
And
there are a couple of other notable performers in the middle
of the picture, names of Laurel and Hardy.
Jack "Tin Man" Haley, flanked by Patsy Kelly.
...and to all a good night.
