Alfalfa as Walter Herbert, Office Boy
Alfalfa, as office boy Walter Herbert, tells his boss that
his housekeeper wishes to speak to him. Click to enlarge.

This murky film noir entry concerns a callow, unstable writer who murders his maid after she rejects his romantic overtures. The writer enlists his brother's assistance in disposing of the victim. When the brother winds up being the prime suspect, the writer stands by and does nothing. Nice guy.

Alfalfa's appearance is one of the briefest and most nondescript of his grownup career. He plays an office boy who answers a ringing phone in his employer's office:

Alfalfa: John Burns' accounting office. Office boy Walter Herbert speaking...one moment, please. [Alfalfa puts the phone down and tells his boss who's on the line] Uh, it's your housekeeper, she'd like a word with you, Mr. Burns.

"House By the River" was directed by Fritz Lang, who was on the downside of a career that had included the classic films "M" and "Metropolis".
