Robert Wagner plays Sam Gifford, a wealthy,
callow Southern businessman who is drafted into the army and grows
up quickly. He is transferred to the command of the decidedly off-the-wall
Broderick Crawford (Alfalfa's only scene occurs when Wagner climbs
from his jeep and reports to Crawford.) Although Wagner and Crawford
butt heads right from the start, by the end of the film it is clear
that in an odd way, Crawford has helped Wagner change his attitude
for the better.
To say that Alfalfa's appearance in "Between Heaven and Hell"
is brief is an understatement. And it is still jarring to see our
hero looking positively grizzled, with a 5-o'clock shadow, mussed
hair, and holding a cigarette. These are the types of roles Alfalfa
was seeking with greater frequency during the late fifties, before
his life was cut short in 1959.
