Sprucin' Up

Alfalfa
is at his most precocious in this, his third episode. A new girl
(Marianne Edwards) moves into the neighborhood, and even Alfalfa
is compelled to start practicing better grooming habits. To control
his unruly "egg beater"
cowlick, he utilizes copious amounts of lard, right out of the
can, then heads over to the new girl's handsome home and somehow
talks his way past her blustery father unbeknownst to Spanky,
who has the same visions of courtship dancing in his head and shows
up after Alfalfa's arrival.
We
are then treated to our first really extended set-piece scene between
Spanky and Alfalfa, as they both desperately vie for Marianne's
attention. Their competition culminates in a memorable chin-up battle,
during which Marianne's true paramour (Jerry Tucker) shows up and
steals the little girl away while the boys are stranded on the chin-up
bar.
Although
the boys' timing is still quite not fully developed, their natural
talent and personality steals the show. Two of our favorite sequences:
Before leaving the house early in the episode, Alfalfa's mother
stops him to ask if he's brushed his teeth. "Yep!', he proudly
answers, "both of 'em!" Then, after giving Marianne
a goofy photographic portrait of himself, he beams happily to her,
"I'm a pretty good-looking fellaain't I?"
